The term biosolids is often applied to a variety of industrial process waste stream materials that can provide a benefit as a soil application. Sewage biosolids refers to stabilized sludge in Ontario Regulation 347. Biosolids may also refer to other processed organic waste such as material that originates from tanneries, food processing facilities, paper mills, and ethanol plants.
Although hauled sewage and manure are not identified as biosolids, management of both materials will also benefit soil quality, provide economic advantages and protect the environment.
Regulatory guidelines provide the framework to control the use of biosolids on land, while protecting the environment, consumer and animal health, food quality, and the productivity of the land.
